Rep. Butler to Serve on Interagency Military Base Support and Economic Development Committee

State Representative Tim Butler (R-Springfield) has been appointed to serve on the Interagency Military Base Support and Economic Development Committee by House Republican Leader Jim Durkin.

Established in 2005, the Interagency Military Base Support and Economic Development Committee was formed to coordinate the State's activities and to act as a communications center for issues relating to current and former military bases in the State.  This State committee is a direct result of the Federal Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC). In 2005, the most-recent round of BRAC gutted the flying mission of the Illinois Air National Guard’s Springfield-based 183rd Fighter Wing.  The F-16s from the 183rd were transferred to an out-of-state base.

“I look forward to representing the military interests of the entire State of Illinois through service on this committee.” said Rep. Butler.  “I have first-hand experience with the BRAC process through the efforts we made in Springfield to save the 183rd’s F-16s.  Making sure our military has the resources it needs to operate in Illinois is crucial to our national security and I will be a zealous advocate for our state’s military bases.

The 87th district represented by Rep. Butler is home to both Camp Lincoln, the headquarters of The Illinois National Guard and the continued operations of the 183rd Fighter Wing, located at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield.   Butler was a Springfield-based point person on the staff of former Congressman Ray LaHood during the 2005 BRAC process.

The Interagency Military Base Support and Economic Development Committee is chaired by Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti.
