Statement on Proposal to Change Lincoln Presidential Library and Historic Preservation Agency Oversight

State Representative Tim Butler (R-Springfield) released the statement below following today's passage of SB 1728, legislation to restructure both the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Board and the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency:

“Today’s partisan vote is the wrong approach, these are Executive agencies under Governor Rauner and there needs to be a bi-partisan agreement.  The Democrats in the House walked away from negotiations on this very issue and decided to pass their own bill.  These entities are too important to our community and our entire state to have them hijacked for political purposes.  I firmly believe strong reforms need to be made to both the Historic Preservation Agency and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.  This, though, is not the way to make those reforms.

The fact that there have been zero discussions with each board, the Governor’s office, and local officials is disappointing. Before I can support making changes to how the Lincoln Library and Historic Preservation Agency operates, a meeting with all stakeholders should take place.”
